By-election triggered by Sir John Singleton Copley being elevated to the peerage as 1st Baron Lyndhurst and being called to the House of Lords.

Candidates: Sir Nicholas Conyngham Tindal (Tory) and William John Bankes (Tory).

Connected to Trinity College, Sir Nicholas Tindal had previously worked as a lawyer and solicitor general, and was recommended to the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool by Copley.

Educated at Trinity College, William Bankes spent the 1810s travelling around Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East before returning to campaign for the university. He had been elected for the constituency in 1822 but lost his seat in 1826.

The by-election returned Tindal as MP for the University of Cambridge.
